CLASS TITLE: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

 

Definition:
Under the direction of the site administrator with assistance from the Coordinator of Special Education, provide an educational program for students with learning and/or behavior handicaps whose Individualized Education Program (IEP) specifies placement in a self-contained special education class.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Teaches pupils basic learning skills and subject matter commensurate with emotional, physical and intellectual needs.
  • Provides individualized and group instruction with emphasis on basic skill areas which need remediation.
  • Provide individualized and small group counseling on educational and personal problems related to total growth and development.
  • Selects and adopts from a wide variety of remedial instructional methods and materials those which meet the present needs of pupils assigned to the class.
  • Monitors and evaluates expected progress towards goals stated in the IEP's of all students placed in the class.
  • Trains and directs the work of classroom assistants and volunteers in the classroom.
  • Instructs pupils in other areas of the course of study as specified in state law or administrative regulations and procedures of the District.
  • Provides a learning environment which will promote high standards of pupil behavior and positive attitudes toward self and others.
  • Cooperates in mainstreaming of pupils into regular classrooms in conformance with legal requirements.
  • Assesses academic and social growth of pupils assigned to the class; keeps appropriate records and prepares reports as required by District or state regulations.
  • Participates in the development and revision of the IEP for students placed in the class.
  • Participates with other professional staff on the Child Study Committee in assessing the needs of students referred to the Committee.
  • Communicates with parents through a variety of means; holds parent conferences to discuss the individual pupil's progress.
  • Maintains own professional competence through participation in District, regional or state sponsored in-service activities.
  • Selects and orders books, instructional aids and instructional supplies and maintains required inventory records.
  • Completes District forms and applications and distributes bulletins to pupils as required.
  • Ensures a comfortable room environment through control of heating, lighting and ventilation to the extent possible.
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities and shares in the sponsorship of student activities during the assigned working day.
  • Participates in curriculum programs and staff meetings at the school of assignment and/or on a District level.
  • Administers group tests in accordance with District testing program.
  • Serves as a member of the CSC and IEP team.

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree and graduate level courses in special education. Prior experience in working with learning handicapped or behavior disordered children is desirable with better than average recommendations from supervisors or other professionals who have observed the performance of the teacher.

 

Licenses and Other Requirements:
Special Education Credential, Mild/Moderate Credential or Learning Handicapped with English Language Learner authorization
Post-offer physical examination and drug screen
Fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice
Current X-ray or tuberculin skin test before employment and every four years thereafter

Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
Seeing to read a variety of materials.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
