Early Childhood Education (ECE) Classroom Assistant

 

Location: Early Childhood Education Center 
Schedule: 3.5 hours per day, Monday - Friday 

Work Year: 204 paid days per year

 

 
JOB SUMMARY: 
Under the direction of the Early Childhood Education Director or designee, has direct contact with 3-5 year old students, grade-level teachers, school staff and parents. In coordination with the designated teacher(s) or other school staff, assists in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of students; monitors and reports student progress. The ECE Classroom Assistant supports the equity work of the district through the implementation of the Early Childhood Education Program that is designed to increase access to educational and enrichment services to students.   
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Tutor individual students or groups of students with teacher guidance. 
  • Prepare lessons in coordination with the teacher; administer and score a variety of assessments according to established guidelines. 
  • Assist teachers in a learning environment designed to develop the physical, cognitive, emotional, creative and social skills of all students; assist the teacher with the preparation and presentation of learning materials for individual students or groups of children. 
  • Assist in preparing materials for instruction projects; provide assistance to children and promote interest in activities and learning centers. 
  • Assist teacher in completing the Desired Results process including Desired Results Developmental Profiles (DRDPs) and portfolios. 
  • Monitor and report behavior of students according to approved District policies and procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior. 
  • Organize and supervise student activities as assigned; assist in monitoring lunch periods, field trips, playground, transportation pick up and drop off locations, and other activities as assigned. 
  • Ensure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and regulations; assist children with bathroom procedures as necessary; ensure orderly, safe and clean work areas are maintained. 
  • Assist with meals and snacks as appropriate. 
  • Perform routine clerical duties such as filing and duplicating instructional materials as assigned; assist with preparing charts, bulletin boards and displays; assist with maintaining student records as required. 
  • Operate audiovisual equipment and other instructional technology associated with students’ instructional program. 
  • Serve as a role model and encourage and support students; monitor student behavior and communicate with teacher and parents regarding student activities.
  • Confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs. 
  • Oversee and perform clean-up activities related to the instructional program of students. 
  • Assist in maintaining records related to supplies, equipment, inventory and work orders. 
  • Assist in educating children identified as special education having needs in the academic, development, and/or behavioral areas. 
  • Assist in care for student's physical needs including diapering, toileting, feeding, lifting and moving of children as needed.    
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 
  • Perform reasonably related duties as assigned. 
  • Participate in meetings, conferences and professional development as assigned.   
JOB REQUIREMENTS   
 
KNOWLEDGE OF: 
  • Basic needs and characteristics of 3-5-year-old children. 
  • Basic subjects taught in the District schools, including prekindergarten and primary grades. 
  • Operation of duplicating machines and instructional equipment. 
  • Safe practices in classroom and playground activities. 
  • Early childhood guidance principles and practices.   
ABILITY TO:
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for and interest in the instructional program. 
  • Effectively communicate with and understand the needs of students, utilizing correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. 
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all students, families, and school staff.
  • Plan and organize work to meet schedules and timelines.
  • Maintain records, reports and classroom schedules.
  • Read, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures. 
  • Maintain confidentiality concerning students and school records.  
  • Maintain regular attendance necessary to support instructional program. 
  • Work effectively and communicate with diverse groups of people.   
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 
  • High school diploma or equivalent to graduation from high school (required).
  • One year experience working with 3-5 year old children (required).
  • Two years of study (48 semester units) at an institution of higher education beyond high school (preferred). 
  • Six Early Childhood Education or Child Development Units (required). 
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish - Fluent in reading, writing, and speaking (preferred).  
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:  
Must demonstrate knowledge of reading, writing, and math skills to support students’ instruction program. This knowledge can be demonstrated by the following: 
  • Certification in Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED issued by the American Red Cross/American Heart Association or Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) approved training program. 
  • Certification of completion of AB 1207 - CALIFORNIA CHILD CARE PROVIDERS: MANDATED REPORTER TRAINING. 
  • Passage of written Paraprofessional Examination.  
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Passage of District pre-employment test. 
  • Post-offer physical examination and drug screening. 
  • Fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice. 
  • Tuberculin skin test before employment and every four years thereafter or a chest x-ray. 
  • Possession of current valid California Driver’s License and private vehicle availability may be required (mileage expense allowance provided for district related business).

  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on telephone. 
  • Seeing to read, prepare and proofread documents and perform assigned duties. 
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. 
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment. 
  • Kneeling, bending at the waist, and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies. 
  • Individually lifting a maximum of 15 lbs; greater than 15 lbs requires assisted lifting from other staff member
