Location: Vista La Mesa Academy
Schedule: 8:15am-2:45pm, Monday-Friday

Work Year: 204 paid days per year

 

DEFINITION:

Provides assistance to the instructional and intervention programs specific to the special education program for all identified students for special education services in school classrooms and/or resource and learning centers and supports student instruction individually or in small groups.  

 

JOB RELATIONSHIPS: 

Supervised by school administrator, with input from the Director of Special Education, work duties are directed by administrator and/or the assigned special education teacher, works cooperatively with other certificated and classified school staff, works cooperatively with all students.   

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Tutor individual students or groups of students with teacher direction.
  • Utilizes curricular materials and assessments for instruction and intervention as directed by teacher, administrator or the Director of Special Education.
  • Help students complete class assignments and work according to their goals as written in their Individual Education Plan.
  • Correct student papers, check homework assignments and corrects students’ seat work.
  • Administer, score and record results of tests, quizzes, classwork, and homework.
  • Supervise students in the classrooms, resource and learning centers, playground, cafeteria, and bus drop off and pick up areas in the absence of the classroom teacher and at assemblies, on fieldtrips with the class and with their grade level peers.
  • Operates and assists students in the use of a variety of supplementary instructional materials including audiovisual and technology tools, behavior charts, picture exchange communication system (PECS), social stories, and other designated techniques following the teacher’s plan and the students’ Individual Education Plan. 
  • Mediate student disputes and provide appropriate behavioral intervention as required.
  • Maintain and record class rolls, attendance, data collection sheets for behavior, academics, social goals, as well as other records.
  • May assist in maintaining records related to supplies, equipment, inventory and work orders.
  • Gather, compile, and prepare data for reports, conferences and instructional meetings.
  • Participate in staff development programs as directed. 
  • Oversee and perform clean up activities related to the instructional program of students and the needs of the students.
  • Arrange bulletin boards and other instructional displays.
  • Prepare instructional materials and help students locate reference materials.
  • May train and direct peer coaches and helpers.

  • Maintain regular attendance necessary to support instructional program 
EDUCATION:
  • High school diploma or equivalent to graduation from high school
  • Associate Degree with 48 units in education or related field is desired. 

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS: 

Must demonstrate knowledge of reading, writing, and math skills to support students’ instruction program. This knowledge can be demonstrated by one of the following: 

 

  • Certificate verifying No Child Left Behind “highly qualified status” issued by previous public school agency 
  • Two years of study (48 semester units) at an institution of higher education beyond high school 
  • Obtained Associate’s (or higher) degree
  • Passage of written Paraprofessional NCLB Examination 
Preference of training or work experience with student with special needs, positive communication methods, data collection, Applied Behavior Analysis, ProAct, CPI, or equivalent crisis management prevention training. 
 


LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Passage of District pre-employment test 
  • Post-offer physical examination and drug screening
  • Fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice and FBI
  • Tuberculin skin test or screening before employment and every four years thereafter or a chest x-ray
  • Possession of current valid California Driver’s License and private vehicle availability may be required (mileage expense allowance provided for district related business) 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 
  • Indoor classroom and outdoor settings 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on telephone 
  • Seeing to read, prepare and proofread documents and perform assigned duties
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment
  • Kneeling, bending at the waist, and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies
  • Lifting light objects and materials and supporting students per protocols (up to 25 pounds)
