CLASS TITLE: GROUNDS WORKER
Schedule: 6:00 am - 2:30 pm, Monday - Friday
On Call, As needed Assignments
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Director of Facilities, Maintenance, Operations and Transportation, performs routine and skilled grounds maintenance and gardening work.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Plant, mow, rake, edge, weed, water and fertilize flowers, shrubs, trees, lawns and fields.
Operate trucks, power mowers, sprayers, tractors, edgers, trimmers and use other gardening tools including but not limited to shovel, pick, hand and power tools.
Erect barriers around newly planted areas.
Cultivate and prepare grounds for planting; move trees, shrubs and flowers.
Control pests and plant diseases.
Maintain athletic fields, blacktop surfaces, ditches, fences and playground equipment.
Sweep sidewalk and other assigned areas.
Work with and around hazardous materials and may be required to participate in emergency cleanup of potential hazardous waste or material spills; disposes of undesirable material.
Service and make minor repairs to power mowers, edgers and other assigned equipment.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Perform other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Basic methods and tools used in planting, cultivating and caring for lawns, flowers, shrubs and trees.
Reading and writing English communication skills.
ABILITY TO:
Perform general gardening and grounds work
Heavy manual labor
Accept direction and intelligently follow instructions
Work cooperatively with the public, administration and fellow employees
Read, write, speak and understand the English language
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred
EXPERIENCE:
Two years of successful employment in grounds or landscape maintenance
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
District pre-employment test
Post offer physical examination
Fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice
Current X-ray or tuberculin skin test before employment and every four years thereafter
Current valid California driver’s license
WORK CONDITIONS:
Outdoor environment
Equipment with moving parts
Exposure to dust, chemicals and pesticides
Variances in temperature
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Occasional lifting, carrying and maneuvering heavy objects
Occasional squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting, simple grasping
Frequent to constant walking, including walking on gravel or uneven surfaces
Bending at the neck or waist
Stooping, reaching, pushing and pulling
